Is there a future for the X-Ray Dealer?

This series of blogs was prompted by a request to speak at a meeting of x-ray dealers.  The question posed was, “Well Dan, you have been selling to x-ray dealers since 1981.  Is there a future for the x-ray dealer?”

Having just celebrated my 63rd birthday, I guess some people think I have great insights.  Ok, I’ll assume they are correct […]

We need to push for the whole story…even if it’s in a trade magazine.

ITN magazine published a story about the recent legislation and reimbursement rates for film, CR and DR.  This, as you know, has been a topic of interest of mine.

Greg Freiher’s article, “The Coming Push for DR,” (http://www.itnonline.com/article/coming-push-dr-2) contains a fair description of the US Congress’ 2015 law to impose penalties for the continued use of x-ray film and CR digital […]

Update – FDA Workshop of Refurbishing and Servicing by 3rd Parties and OEM’s

Last Thursday and Friday the FDA conducted the above workshop. I listened to about half of it on the webcast and although this note is in no way definitive, I wanted to give you my perspective on what I heard.  In the next few weeks there are certain to be a number of detailed articles and I plan to summarize […]

Preparing Used Equipment for the Fastest Turn

Today, the largest segment of my business is selling pre-owned medical equipment.  Much of it is sourced from the same dealers (yourselves included) that used to buy our AMS viewboxes.

Selling used equipment locally will always give you the largest return, but for those who question why you might use a wholesale partner like us, need I remind you that you […]

UPDATE: By the June 3rd deadline 176 organizations and individuals had responded to the FDA call for comments.

The initial comment period that asked for written responses has passed.  The FDA reports receiving 176 comments from industry groups, OEM’s, independent service companies, and individuals.

There is a very good article in this month’s DotMed’s HealthCare Business News.  The report includes many interesting comments from representatives of most of the interested parties.

The general arguments are predictable.  The OEM’s and their […]

Update on FDA’s consideration of of the medical equipment service/refurbishment industry

Here are two items that should grab your attention:

First, the FDA has annouced dates for their public workshop on “Refurbishing, Reconditioning, Rebuilding, Remarketing, Remanufacturing, and Servicing of Medical Devices Performed by Third-Party Entities and Original Equipment Manufacturers”

It will be held on Thursday and Friday, October 27-28, 2016 at the FDA’s White Oak Campus, 10903 New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring, Maryland  […]

FDA considers the need for additional regulation of the medical equipment service/refurbishment industry.

The purpose of this blog is to make sure all of the independent service and sales organizations (“ISO’s”) are aware of a recent FDA “docket” item.  It is, according to the FDA, to receive comments “concerning the service, maintenance, refurbishment and alteration of medical devices by third-party entities, as well as challenges third-party entities face in maintainging or restoring devices […]

One more helpful hint about CR vs. DR reimbursement and then on to film!

I know you might think I’m milking the reimbursement issue for as many blogs as possible, but unless something more comes to light this is my last blog on this issue.  (I’m looking at the OEM vs. ISO issue that the FDA is asking for comments about…seems like another attempt to cut out the independent business …but that’s the next […]

Why you may not care about the new CR reimbursement issue…but should be mad anyways.

Now I’m really mad.  I’m a businessman but I’m also a citizen.  I believe in capitalism but in the form that requires hard work and fair play.

So here’s the next blog “installment” about the new reimbursement rates for film, CR and DR.

As we have already discussed, the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2015 was pushed by Varian, their trade lobbying group […]

Did you know about the reduced reimbursement for X-Ray Film and CR studies?

There is a widely published report that Medicare will reduce payments for analog x-ray studies in 2017 and that in 2018, it will begin to reduce payments for CR as well.  It is clear that reimbursement rates for film studies will drop by 20% in 2017, but it is also reported that the initial rate cuts for CR will be […]
